Still Life

Narrative Figure

For the Self portrait, I decided to get a picture of myself and go from there. The values range from a high 2 to a low 10. For the negative space i decided to use the ultramarine blue and the turquoise because its my favorite color. Although i was told it looked dream-like it kind of pops the figure out. It probably wouldve been more popped if i subdued the negative space a little bit. I think i did a great job on the cast shadows because i usually paint light and have small shadows but i was coached by another student and my teacher and they steered me in a new direction of depicting shadowing. I made the high chroma areas in the areas where light was intense and lower chroma in the areas of darker value. I showed volume by roounding the figure at the edges. The forehead looks rounded because i suggested subtle shadowing around the hairline and build up different planes. I showed good depth in the figure but not so much in the negative space. I think thats one thing i could continue to work on. For me, variation of brushstroke is a hard thing for me to do because i am a painter that likes the more realistic approach then the impressionistic approach, Therefore I didnt have that much variation. At first i didnt know what scumbling was until a girl in my class suggested that i scumble the edges of my sharp, unfinished, 2D looking painting. Scumbling is when you kinda dry blend the color in the figure and the color of the negative space together to make it look diffused. It looked really good when i added the turquoise into the hair to make it tie into the background. When i dont work on a certain area, it tends to get dry and muddled so after i am finished with fine detail, i tend to go back over areas to make them look freshly painted with no effort.

~*Color Schemes & Harmonies*~

In my first 11x12 painting, I chose to emanate the Split Complimentary Harmony. The colors i used were yellow, yellow-orange, and green. The value consists of high key tints ranging from a number 3 on the value scale to a number 7 for the shadowed dark areas. I used a low chroma burnt umber to demonstrate the negative space. As the values of the fruit turn the shape it suggests a rounded form. With the banana i tried to show a form that suggested planes instead of it being a rounded figure. I made the fruit lean up against eachother to show weight being supported. I think this painting shows good depth. I showed the background by portraying a minimal lighted area in back of the still life showing that it is in a box and light has escaped in to make its debut. I showed middleground by putting a wall on the right to show the space that the fruit takes up in the box. The wall in the front shows foreground. My brush strokes are minimal because i like to make it look like it is realistic because it looks neater. This painting consists of very hard edges. I didnt really blend too much in this one. I feel i show good atmospheric space.

In my second 11x14 painting, I decided to show the Complimentary Harmony using Orange and Blue. I decided to keep this painting of mid chroma, So the highest tint is about a 4 and the lowest shade is a 7 on the value scale. With the negative space, I thought i would make the warm areas the orange color and the shade the blue color to suggest a coolness. I think my depth didnt come out as well as i had hoped. I could've made it seem like there was a more distinct background to make it better. When i tried to show shape, it also came out bad because i was just learning, so everything looks banded. I did that to show the variation in value. Next time, i will moddle the values together to make it look a little more blended. I made the edges in this one hard as well. I think i succeeded with the orange but not with the cup.
